Alacare featured in The Daily Home: Team Lisa raises $5,000 in Relay For Life

The Alacare Home Health & Hospice Anniston Branch had another successful year with the 2010 Calhoun County Relay For Life on May 7 and helped raise $5,000 for the fight against cancer.

The team chose the name Alacare Team Lisa to honor co-worker Lisa Worthington, who is battling breast cancer, and selected the Florida Keys “Key to the Cure” as this year’s theme.

Alacare Team Lisa kicked off fundraising efforts in April with a community yard sale that included donated items from branch employees and raised more than $1,100 with its first event. Two weeks later the team held its second fundraiser, “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” and added $700 more to their efforts by selling $5 tickets for a cheeseburger, chips, drink and cookie. Alacare employees and their spouses grilled more than 225 cheeseburgers and delivered them to local businesses that day.

Keeping with their “Keys to the Cure” theme, Alacare Team Lisa put together a “beach basket,” which included beach and summer items donated by Alacare employees. The team accepted $1 donations for a chance to win the beach basket given away at the Relay For Life event.

In addition to the fundraisers, Alacare Team Lisa also raised funds though the Relay For Life website. The website generated $865 through online donations. Alacare Home Health & Hospice did a company match of $1,000, helping the team reach the $5,000 mark for the event. The team’s campsite was decorated to match its “Keys to the Cure” theme and ensure a fun night for employees, their spouses and friends.

“It was such a team effort by the whole branch,” said Kelli Greenwood, an Alacare employee and Calhoun County Relay For Life committee member. “The $5,000 we raised puts us that much closer to a cure for cancer so that no one will ever have to suffer from this horrible disease.”
